Following the recent announcement that obesity is fuelling a Type 2 diabetes epidemic, The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan can reveal Ashley Evans from Norfolk has successfully reversed his type 2 diabetes symptoms after losing five stone in weight on The 1:1 Diet plan.
A University of Oxford study, published in the journal Obesity, also revealed last week that ‘total diet replacement’ programmes (TDRs), combined with one-to-one support, are an effective and cost-efficient way to lose weight long term. The report compared a nurse-led programme with that of The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan, and built on the initial results of a trial by The University of Oxford, DROPLET1 which proved TDRs are a safe and effective way to lose weight.
Ex-firefighter Ashley Evans, 56, is an example of how weight loss through a TDR programme has helped reverse the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
Ashley always dreamed of becoming a firefighter and when he left school, he finally landed his dream job at Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service. For more than 30 years, Ashley attended burning buildings, car fires and road traffic collisions in his attempt to save lives.
Ashley was enjoying his career in the fire service until he attended a call out in extreme weather conditions. A large branch broke off from a tree and knocked him unconscious, leading to an operation. He spent six months unable to walk or do any exercise, which resulted in him having to retire from the job he loved.
Ashley said: “Because of these events, I put on a large amount of weight and, as a result, developed type 2 diabetes. I was put on a lot of medication and constantly felt unwell and lacked energy. My diabetic Consultant explained that, even if I lost just a stone in weight, I would possibly be able to reduce the medication I was on.
“But, like a lot of people, I thought the medication would help and carried on eating as normal - chocolate, crisps and takeaways. I gained even more weight, having to buy larger clothes and carried on ignoring my diabetes.
“During this time I took a holiday to Jamaica. When I saw the photos of myself, I was so shocked I decided I had to do something. So I looked for a diet that would kick start my weight loss. I discovered The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan and it was honestly the best thing I’ve done.
“With the support of my wonderful consultant, Mandy Smith, I lost five stone. As I result, I’ve reversed the symptoms of my type 2 diabetes and am no longer on any medication – my GP is absolutely delighted.”
Ashley is now in the process of training to become a consultant for The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan, joining more than 5,000 others across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
He added: “I can't wait to help other people lose weight and perhaps even support others with type 2 diabetes in helping them reverse their symptoms. I’m living proof it can be done . . . I've got my weight and health back under control and I've got my life back. And a new career!
“The 1:1 Diet may be completely different to the firefighting career I once had, but it has been a life- saver for me – so in a way, could still be a life-saving career!”
