Double celebrations for Corby weight loss firm

Published: 10th October, 2019

The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan celebrated Employee Ownership Day (EO Day) and its 35th anniversary with a summer garden party for its 226 stakeholders in Corby.

The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan is one of a few employee-owned businesses in Northamptonshire and started out in 1984 as The Cambridge Diet.

Its managing director, Chris McDermott, said this year was a significant landmark for the direct selling company, which changed its name last year as part of a multi-million pound advertising and marketing campaign.

He said: “We are delighted to be celebrating 35 years and couldn’t be prouder of all the achievements the brand has made leading us to this major milestone.

“The fact that this new chapter has begun with us hitting a high of 6,000 people selling our products in the UK is testament to the fantastic work of our team in Corby.”

The diet food manufacturing company, which is based in Weldon Industrial Estate, became a 100 per cent employee-owned business in 2014, offering great benefits to its stakeholders.

Chris said: “As The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan is an employee-owned business (with a very similar model to John Lewis), I take my responsibilities in leading such a business very seriously. I want to ensure that what we are building something in Corby that is not only successful now, but will still be around in 20 or 30 years’ time.”

And it’s a double celebration as The Employee Ownership Association celebrates 40 years of employee ownership in the UK.

Deb Oxley, CEO of the Employee Ownership Association, said:  “Companies such as The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan are great examples of the economic and social benefits that can be achieved in an employee-owned environment. This is why we celebrate the impacts of employee ownership on the individual, the business and the communities in which they are based.

“The EOA is proud to lead the sector-wide celebrations of employee ownership on EO Day 2019, as part of our activity to raise awareness and support the growth and impact of employee ownership in the UK.”
