What happens after stopping weight loss injections?

With over two million people in the UK paying for private weight loss medications, and a further 3.3 million UK adults interested in starting them over the next year, it's clear that weight loss jabs aren't going anywhere.

Add to that the launch of the new Wegovy weight loss pill in July 2026 and those figures may continue to grow, with the daily pill making weight management even more accessible. But what actually happens to your weight after coming off weight loss injections?

We previously analysed the risks of weight loss injections and with an estimated half of users stopping the medication within 12 months, what happens next is a key concern for many. That's why our nutritionist, Mark Gilbert, draws on his 30 years of experience to explain what happens after stopping weight loss pills or injections, so you can better prepare if you're thinking about starting or coming off Wegovy or Mounjaro.

What happens after you stop taking Mounjaro?

If you're taking one of the UK's most popular weight loss medications, you may be wondering what happens after you stop taking Mounjaro. Stopping the medication causes several changes in the body, including your hunger hormones gradually returning to their previous levels.

As a result, your appetite is likely to increase and the 'food noise' that many people experienced before treatment may return. For many, this leads to a gradual regain of some or all of the weight they lost, alongside a reversal of improvements in health markers such as blood pressure and cholesterol as metabolic changes occur.

Mounjaro takes around four to five weeks to leave your system completely and you may also experience mild digestive changes while your body adjusts.

What happens after stopping Wegovy?

A similar process happens after stopping Wegovy, although the medication typically takes around five to seven weeks to leave your system. As its effects gradually wear off, hunger and appetite will steadily return.

Without long-term lifestyle changes, many people find themselves slipping back into previous eating habits, which can lead to gradual weight regain over time.

Why does weight regain happen after coming off GLP-1s?

Weight loss medications don't directly address the underlying causes of overeating. Instead, they work by reducing appetite and helping you feel fuller for longer. Research has shown that many patients return to their baseline weight within one to two years of stopping these medications.

This is partly because many people haven't had the opportunity to address the root causes of their weight gain, whether that's emotional or comfort eating, unhealthy habits, poor nutritional knowledge or low levels of physical activity. Without tackling these behaviours alongside the medication, it can be difficult to build the sustainable habits needed to maintain weight loss once treatment ends.

Research from Oxford even suggests weight regain happens faster after stopping GLP-1 medications than after conventional dieting. Losing weight is only half the challenge. Maintaining that weight loss is where education, nutrition, accountability and ongoing support become essential, and it's often where medication alone falls short.

How to maintain your weight loss after stopping injections

Maintaining your weight loss after coming off medication is key to achieving long-term success. As you adjust to life without injections, try to:

  • Prioritise fibre to naturally slow digestion and help you feel fuller for longer.

  • Eat enough protein to support fullness and help preserve muscle mass.

  • Eat structured meals every three to five hours to help regulate appetite and blood sugar levels.

  • Aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night, as poor sleep can increase hunger hormones.

  • Complete at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week.

  • Include resistance training to help maintain muscle mass during weight maintenance.

  • Address the root causes of your weight gain to build healthier long-term habits.

  • Improve your nutritional knowledge so your body continues to get the vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs.

How does coming off GLP-1s impact you overall?

The return of 'food noise' and cravings can be challenging to manage, and some people may become anxious about changes on the scales. Emerging research has also suggested that stopping GLP-1 medications may be associated with temporary mood changes or increased anxiety while your body adjusts.

It's important to be patient with yourself during this transition and remember that lasting weight management is built on consistency rather than perfection. Moderation is your friend.
