Juliet Uzor is the reigning winner of the hit BBC2 programme The Great British Sewing Bee. Here she tells us why gave up her job as a primary school teacher to become a full-time Consultant for The 1: 1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan and why she loves making her own clothes, especially jumpsuits .
“My weight gradually crept up over the years because of a number of factors like over-eating, working as a teacher and not being mindful of my wellbeing. At my heaviest, I weighed 13 stone and was a dress size 16.
“I’ve been sewing for five years, mainly occasion and day wear for myself, family and friends, along with making day-to-day wear for my husband and daughter. I have a room dedicated to sewing and write a sewing blog, SewSoNatural, which has almost 20,000 visitors.
“Although I loved making clothes for myself, I would never be photographed when I was overweight or wear jumpsuits because I had no self-confidence.
“The trigger for me to lose weight came was seeing myself in a video dancing with my aunties, who are all in their 50s yet I couldn’t keep up with their energy.
“In October 2017 I signed up with The 1:1 Diet Consultant, Nyree Turner, and went on Sole Source at first, gradually working my way up the Steps.
“I lost two-and-a-half stones in four months and have maintained ever since. I’d tried lots of diets in the past but this is different because of the one-to-one support. I wouldn’t have been able to lose the weight and keep it off without that support of my Consultant, Nyree.
“We used to have a weekly weigh-in and she would check in with me on WhatsApp.
“I decided to become a Consultant for The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan after going to a business opportunity evening with Nyree. I heard Consultants Michelle Toner and Victoria Moss speak and, they’d been in education before and I thought ‘if they can juggle it all, I can too’. At that point, I had no intention of quitting full-time teaching but I did so last July and am now a full-time Consultant helping others lose weight.”
“I now make clothes and am happy to be photographed in them – using the images to promote my blog and Instagram. And I love making jumpsuits now because I feel so much more confident and love wearing them!”
